In Kidal, the inhabitants are mobilizing against insalubrity

A sanitation operation has been launched to improve the living conditions of the populations that are facing the lack of waste collection infrastructure.

The operation brings together the nine sanitation committees of the city and will last two weeks. The project involves communities and enables the most vulnerable households to be able to support themselves through these short-term jobs. “The issue of insalubrity concerns us all, and every day it becomes complicated”, says Fatma Wallet, a resident of Kidal.

The monitoring of the work is done on several levels, according to the chairman of the management commission of the city of Kidal. “We have taken an important step on the issue of insalubrity in partnership with the Luxembourgish Cooperation which has offered us materials for the sanitation of the city. We have also decided at our level to follow up these activities so that they are well executed, by choosing neighborhood leaders as the direct supervisors of the sanitation works. We, too, are watching the neighborhood leaders to put pressure to stem this phenomenon”, says Oufene Ag Mohamed, chairman of the commission.

After the wastes collection, their treatment is the other challenge, according to the management committee of the city.
