A Nigerien army patrol opened fire on a vehicle carrying migrants who left Agadez for Libya via Dirkou, Sahelien.com learned, yesterday from a local source. One migrant was killed and three others injured.
According to the same source, the driver thinking of an attack of armed bandits refused to obey the orders of the security forces who asked him to stop.
Since the adoption of the Nigerian government’s law against migrant smuggling in May 2016, the defense and security forces have been increasing their operations on the ground. Migrants leaving for Libya or Algeria use various routes to avoid being intercepted.
