The UN Security Council could vote, on Tuesday, September 5, to establish a “general sanctions regime” for Mali. The objective is, according to sources in Bamako, to “dissuade offenders” of the peace agreement signed two years ago.
The request for the resolution was made by the Malian authorities, but it was brought to the United Nations Security Council by France. The sanctions regime targets the perpetrators of violations of the peace and réconciliation agreement signed by the government and the armed groups of the Platform and the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA).
The sanctions could range from the “possibility of travel bans to freezing assets” against the authors of the various obstructions to the implementation of the agreement identified by a sanctions committee.
“We believe that this is necessary today to consolidate the achievements and dissuade the signatory groups to continue to question the ceaseless violations of the agreement”, a source in Bamako said.
In Mali, implementation of the peace agreement is regularly hampered by attacks between signatory armed groups and other attacks on the Malian army and UN peacekeepers.
