In Niger, floods following the torrential rains recorded since June and the flooding of the river affected about 194,000 people and caused 54 casualties on September 13. This report of the Ministry of Humanitarian Action and Disaster Management is published in the latest report of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA-Niger).
According to the UN agency, 80 per cent of the people affected live in the Dosso, Niamey, Maradi and Agadez regions.
“More than 9,000 habitats, 31 schools and 709 damaged wells and 16,000 heads of cattle washed away have been recorded. On the agricultural side, 9,800 hectares of farm areas have been lost”, the note says.

As regards the hydrological situation of the Niger basin, the river flood reached a height of 595 cm corresponding to the orange alert level on September 13.
During the week of September 17, it had dropped to 567 cm corresponding to the yellow alert level, explains the UN agency which adds that the red alert level is triggered when the height of the water is between 615 and 620 cm.
Still according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, rains have affected an estimated 117,000 people throughout the country, and the flooding of the river has affected in some 76,000 people in the Dosso, Niamey and Tillabery regions.
