Mali expels the teacher of the French high school at the origin of the controversial assignment on Azawad

The teacher of the French high school of Bamako at the origin of the controversial assignment was expelled this Monday from Mali. Professor of history and geography, he had given his students an assignment in which one question referred to Azawad as a territory and Gao as its capital. Mali has decided to expel him.

The controversial assignment affair, in which a question was about Azawad, has had a consequence, certainly unfortunate for the teacher who is at the origin. The Malian government has decided, on October 23, to expel Mr. Guiovanopoulos, professor of history and geography.

A few days ago, this teacher from Bamako French High School, “Liberté A”, gave a homework assignment to his students in which a question refered to Azawad as a territory with Gao as capital. This was enough to create outrage, particularly on social networks, leading the French Embassy to react by apologizing.

In Mali, the question of Azawad remains a bone of contention between the Malian government and the separatist ex-rebels.

In the expulsion measure that it pronounced, the Malian government has notified that the teacher “must leave the national territory imperatively within 72 hours”. According to some information, the teacher would be in France since October 19, just after the controversy has stained networks, carrying anger and misunderstanding. This makes many say that he has been thrown to public opinion.
