At the UN General Assembly, Mali’s President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, said he was “concerned” by the security situation in the central regions of the country, which is suffering from inter-community conflicts and a strong terrorist presence in some major localities.
“This is a particular situation that has become acute and urgent after the discussions in Algiers”, said Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta from the podium of the 72nd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. Emphasizing the urgency of “securing” and “pacifying this new front”.
The center of Mali concentrates the greatest number of conflicts between communities, according to various national studies and non-governmental organizations. A situation now worsened by a strong presence of terrorist groups to the detriment of the State.
“No single country can deal with these cross-border threats”
Underlining the need for the deployment of the G5-Sahel force, the Malian president said that “no country” is in a position to contain cross-border threats.
“They sow death in their criminal and asymmetrical attacks. Pushing their actions in the conquest of lands partially removed from the sovereignty of our countries, admitted Mr. Keïta. They allow themselves to maintain and extend their criminal activities, seriously threatening the foundations and even the very existence of our States.”
