Mali : In Mopti, residents say “no” to killings in the region

A few dozen people expressed their discontent, Wednesday, June 12, in the afternoon, at the entrance of the city.

Banners, paper in hands, they chanted “We want peace in the Mopti region”, “Never again” in front of the hotel which housed the Minister of Defense who is there since yesterday.

“We came out because we are tired of seeing our parents experience these kinds of tragedies.  It was our relatives who were killed in the Bandiagara Circle”, said a protester.  And to add: “We can’t understand that we are forbidden to enter or leave the city from 6pm.  Also, we can’t ride motorcycles anymore.  Our Bozo relatives can no longer come for treatment while these same machines are still used to massacre people.  We can’t accept that anymore”.

This sit-in comes after the attack on the village of Sobane Da, in the rural commune of Sangha (Bandiagara circle), on the night of June 9 to 10.  The report of 95 dead previously announced has been scaled down.  It has been reduced to 35 (11 adults and 24 children) the authorities announced.

“Drawing lessons from this tragedy,” the Council of Ministers meeting in an  ordinary session on Wednesday, “has proceeded to the dismissal of the governor of the Mopti region”, the final statement states.

A three day mourning was decreed from Thursday, June 13 throughout the national territory in tribute to the victims of the attack.
