Mali : three Gatia fighters killed in Menaka

In Anderamboukane, in the Menaka region, three fighters of the Tuareg Imghads and allies armed group (Gatia) lost their lives in an attack. The suspicions are directed towards the small terrorist groups that act along the border between Mali and Niger.

«Apparently the terrorists took advantage of the fact that the majority of the elements were absent to attack three young people who controlled a position in Anderamboukane», says a local source, who asked for anonymity, before adding that the attackers fled south-west pursued by fighters of the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad and the Tuareg Imghads and Allies armed group (Gatia). In the locality of Anderamboukane, in the Menaka region, the positions are guarded by the MSA and the Gatia.

This latter movement, which has just lost three men, is one of the signatories of the Peace Agreement resulting from the Algiers process. The attack took place between 3am and 4am this Saturday, January 6. Even if there is little information about the attackers, according to a Malian military source, they are only the small terrorist groups operating in the area: «The same ones who act along the border between Mali and Niger», it says. An inhabitant of the zone, reached by Sahelien.com says that the attackers also destroyed the equipment of the Orange Mali network by shots.

In recent weeks, these self-defense movements and the Malian army have mounted a security system on the initiative of the governor of the region, Daouda Maïga, to secure the people and their families and their properties. But the mission is delicate. This region is subject to attacks by the men of the jihadist Abu Walid al-Sahrawi. In addition, several attacks have been claimed by the Group of support to Islam and Muslims led by Iyad Ag Ghaly.

«It has been a long time since there was an attack in this locality. They took advantage of the temporary vacuum to act against isolated people», says this fighter of the MSA.
