The Security Council of the United Nations on Tuesday referred to the security situation in the Sahel while two major attacks have hit Burkina Faso and Mali. El-Ghassim Wane, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, called for “the unique opportunity to set up” the G5-Sahel Force.
“Through a regional approach, this Joint force can make a significant contribution to the stabilization of the Sahel, in synergy with other initiatives”, Wane said in a press release, proposing to provide simultaneously solutions to the other causes of instability.
A meeting held while 18 people perished on Sunday in an attack in Ouagadougou and nearly ten others in an attack on the UN mission in central and northern Mali.

In the Security Council, countries like the United States are asking questions about the coordination between this force, the national armies and the 4,000 soldiers of the French army and the overall political framework of its intervention. For Mali and the other members of the G5, the challenge lies elsewhere. This is the thorny issue of financing the some 423 million euros needed for its operation, to which Americans are particularly reluctant.
Until proven otherwise, it is up to the G5 States to provide the Force with the necessary resources for its operation.
