A group of 67 migrants, all foreign nationals, was located and rescued on July 5, 40 km from Séguédine. They too have been abandoned by their smugglers without provisions for food and water.
One of them died and the others were sent to Séguédine. The same day this time, 650 km from Agadez, near a village called Lataye (not far from Dirkou), two bodies of unidentified migrants were buried.
According to sources close to the Dirkou authorities contacted by Sahelien.com, “it is the incessant ball of rapacious birds over the place that alerted people and allowed to discover their bodies”.
According to Elhadji Laouel Taher, in charge of a relief scheme for migrants in distress in the desert: “The situation is very worrying! There is an urgent need to find solutions, otherwise the Tenere will whiten corpses of young West Africans”.
At the end of June, the International Organization for Migration reported that 600 migrants have been rescued in the desert since April, but another 52 have died.
